The city is a great holiday destination, whether you want to spend most of your time exploring and visiting museums or just relax on the beach with a cocktail in hand.
1. walk in the old town of Split (Diocletian’s Palace)
One thing that makes Split such a special destination is that its old town has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is because the old town of Split is located within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, which was famous as the residence of the Roman emperor.
My favorite thing to do in Split was to walk through the narrow cobbled alleys. All the cobbled alleys look the same, which was a nightmare for me because I have a bad sense of direction. But I liked to get lost in the narrow alleys and I made it my mission to pet all the stray cats who came up to me.
2. see the view from the bell tower of St. Dominus Cathedral
The bell tower of St. Dominus Cathedral is the most distinctive landmark in Split. It is visible from anywhere in the city and therefore constantly invites you to climb it and see what the view looks like from above.
this is the best view in Split, and you can stay on top of the tower as much as you want. First of all, make sure you have a bottle of water, because the climb is long and tiring. Then head to the ticket office in front of the cathedral and buy tickets for the bell tower.
You can then climb the stairs to the entrance of the church and turn left to enter the lower part of the tower. There are a lot of steep steps to climb, and the stairs are very narrow, but the effort will pay off once you reach the Top.

One of the reasons why Split has become internationally famous in recent years is that it features prominently in Game of Thrones. Most of the scenes in the TV show were shot inside the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, and some places you may recognize by walking around the old Town.

Located just an hour from Split, the Krka National Park is one of the best national parks in the country. I enjoyed the Plitvice lakes more, but that’s because I went to Krka during a national holiday and the crowd was way too big for my taste.
Head to the Lozovac entrance to the park, as it is the closest to Split. It is a huge national park and it will take you 5 to 6 hours to see everything. Bus trips in the park are included in the ticket price and can save you hours of walking through the streets.
The Skradinski Buk waterfall is the closest to the southern entrance (Lozovac). The Roski waterfall is located near the northern entrance to the park. The Franciscan monastery, located on a small island in the central area of the park, is another highlight, and boat trips to the monastery are offered for an additional fee.
